Lost or unclaimed funds refers to an amount of money that is owed to an individual or family by a certain state government agency. Many people do not realize that federal and state agencies hold billions of dollars annually in these unclaimed funds.

During a foreclosure sale, the entity in charge of selling your foreclosed property must recoup the sum amount of money that is owed from taxes, penalties, fees, and interest charges. The opening bid price starts with the total of that amount. If that property sells for a higher amount than the opening bid price, that excess amount is owed to the previous homeowner (pending any junior liens holders that are entitled to their money first). 

You actually were notified by mail. However, the government agency holding these funds can only send the notification to the address they currently have on file for you. Typically the address they have on file for you is that of the foreclosed property (your previous address).

After the claim has been filed and approved, it generally takes the governing agency holding the funds 2-6 weeks to release them. This is where we correspond on a daily basis with the agency to stay on top of them and maintain their timeliness. After all, we are dealing with a state agency here who moves at an extremely slow pace. This is why it is imperative to get the legal documents signed and delivered back to us as soon as possible so we can get this claim submitted and get this process expedited.
